Loop Energy and Hydrogen In Motion Inc. (H2M) Announce Project in British Columbia to Convert Diesel Electric Locomotive to Hydrogen Electric
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA – September 1, 2021 – Loop Energy (TSX: LPEN), a developer and manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell-based solutions, and Hydrogen In Motion (H2M), a leading provider of solid state hydrogen storage, announce their plans to collaborate on converting a Southern Railway of BC owned and operated diesel electric switcher locomotive to hydrogen electric.
The two British Columbia-based companies will use locally developed technology, including Loop Energy’s 50kw eFlow™ fuel cell system and a low pressure solid state hydrogen storage tank developed by H2M. The project signifies the first instance of Loop supplying its products for use in a rail transport application.
“This is an exciting phase for the hydrogen fuel cell industry as this proves that it is technically and economically feasible to convert diesel-powered switcher locomotives to hydrogen fuel cell-based power systems,” said Grace Quan, CEO of Hydrogen-in-Motion. “The introduction of a hydrogen infrastructure into railyards reduces air contaminants and greenhouse gases and brings clean technologies, job growth and innovation to local communities.”
In conjunction with Loop Energy, H2M will be working with the University of British Columbia Okanagan School of Engineering (UBCO) and Southern Railway of BC (SRY). Under this collaboration, UBCO’s research component will conduct computational modeling of H2M low pressure tanks, comparing the hydrogen electric powertrain performance characteristics and operational functionality with those of the previous diesel electric locomotive. SRY has committed to demonstrating this hydrogen powered switcher locomotive in order to prove out viability and demonstrate GHG and other community impacts.
The introduction of a hydrogen infrastructure into railyards reduces air contaminants and greenhouse gases and brings clean technologies, job growth and innovation to local communities. With the successful demonstration of this retrofit, SRY as an industry leader in sustainable carbon neutral rail operations, will be able to onboard the rest of their fleet as well as transfer this technology to other rail carriers such as CP and CN rail for a nation-wide impact. Other heavy duty operators in truck and equipment can leverage this knowledge as well as possibly share infrastructure in intermodal low pressure hydrogen refueling nodes.

In addition of equipment and manpower provided by consortium members, SRY, H2M, UBCO, and Loop Energy, partial funding has generously been provided by the Government of British Columbia through the BC Advanced Research and Commercialization program as well as the Government of Canada through the MITACS and the Industrial Research Assistance Program at the National Research Council.

Press Release Hydrogen In Motion Inc., Canada and H2e Power, India to develop a Hydrogen 3-Wheeler for Indian & global markets
Vancouver, CANADA – July 30, 2021— Hydrogen In Motion (H2M) announced a collaboration with H2e Power out of Pune, India for a project to assess, design, install and demonstrate a hydrogen fuel cell 3-Wheeler using H2e PEM Fuel Cell integrated with Hydrogen In Motion’s innovative solid state hydrogen storage technology onboard. This Indo-Canadian collaboration leverages the zero emission and hydrogen strategies released in India and Canada. Hydrogen In Motion is receiving advisory services and up to $600,000 in funding support for this project through the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP). CIIP is a funding program offered by Global Affairs Canada and is delivered in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP). Respectively in India, H2e’s contributions towards this collaboration are supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) in collaboration with Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA).
About This Project – This project will install a hydrogen fuel cell range extender using H2M low pressure hydrogen storage tanks on an electric powered three-wheeled auto rickshaw. Project goal is to significantly extend operational range and provide auxiliary power for home use when not in service.

The project will develop a revolutionary, conformable hydrogen storage tank solution for fuel cell electric vehicles. The specific objective of this research collaboration is to develop a hydrogen storage medium that is stable at ambient conditions, has a high gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity and can be packed into a fuel tank for use in vehicles.
CHENNAI: Clean tech start-up h2e Power Systems on Friday announced that it would be developing the country’s first hydrogen-powered three-wheeler in a project begun in collaboration with Canadian energy firm Hydorgen in Motion. h2e Power Systems is backed by vaccine major Serum Institute of India’s (SII) Adar Poonawalla.
Mumbai: Pune-based h2e Power Systems, part of the Poonawalla Group, is developing India’s first totally integrated hydrogen fuel cell three-wheeler using PEM (proton-exchange membrane) fuel cell and innovative hydrogen cylinders, the company said on Friday.
